I recently took a road trip up to Portland (Oregon) – it took only 17 hours! 17 hours! That is a lot of time. It would take less than 3 if you took a plane. How crazy is that?
I like to see the glass half full – it was much cheaper to drive plus I’m not from here so I took in the scenery like a sponge.
First, the desert.
Then the mountains
Beautiful lakes and rivers along the road side
Some fog in between
Topped off by a beautiful California sunset
And then many hours later. Finally!
Yes, it is absolutely insane to drive up all the way to Portland. But if you have the time and if you want to get to know California (and Oregon) a little better then you are in for a treat. There are countless beautiful sights along this drive!
We actually split this drive up into two days. We stayed at an amazing hotel in Dunsmuir (close to Mt Shasta) – the Railroad Park Resort. In its golden era, Dunsmuir was once an important, thriving railroad community. In the 60s some local descendents of pioneering railroaders, decided to collect and preserve the old rail era, by transforming rail cars into beautifully renovated units. A really unique experience!
One of the cabooses from the inside. So cozy!
